It Runs in the Family

Growing up you don’t know much about those around you. It takes years for children to familiarize themselves with their families. It takes time to learn about these people and what their lives entail. All the while, still figuring out who they are as well. My family, while we aren’t very close, we are all very much alike in many ways. Resilient, being one of them. While several members of my family have had cancer, different types, there are two in particular I want to cast a bit of light on.

My great-great grandmother, was a survivor. She was one of the people I grew to look up to the most. She was fierce and sassy and brave. Surviving breast cancer twice, she lived until she was 103. A double mastectomy and she was around many years after to tell the tale. Now, I was only about 6 years old when she passed. I didn’t get to know her for very long, but she was the sweetest, toughest, and the most brave woman I have ever known.

Second to that my great uncle. Another brave soul I am proud to know. Diagnosed colon cancer 2023. He is still with us, still fighting. The best daffy duck impersonator any one could meet. As of July 2025, he is going through chemotherapy for the second time. While he is a fighter; While he has not given up, I have to admit the fear of cancer taking him from us is always hanging over my shoulder. As an older man, his body is not as strong. Though he is a tough cookie to crack. I believe in him 100% and I always will.
